Catching Fall Crappie

I have never fished for crappie or walleye in the fall, choosing to chase "Old Mossy Hoof" instead, but his year is going to be different. I am tired of hearing the stories (lies) about the boat loads of fish, so I am loading up my two boys, dragging out the camper and boat, and heading to woods so I see what all the fuss is about.

While I am waiting on my vacation to roll around I will be posting my fall fishing research so that maybe I can save someone else the trouble.

This guy seems like he knows what he is talking about... He even calls himself "The Crappie Guy."

Fall Crappie

If there was ever a time of the year to love crappie fishing, the Fall is the time. The lakes have started to cool, the crappie are starting to instinctively fatten up for the winter’s hard times, and the fishing gets easier as the temps fall. This is the time of the year that I think you have the best chance of catching a really big crappie. Whether you’re flipping stumps, shooting docks, fishing shallow brushpiles, shooting bridge pilings…it doesn’t really matter. You’ll find crappie in all these spots and more. This is the time of year that the novice crappie fisherman should be out gaining his confidence for the long cold months ahead. In North Texas, the crappie will generally start their migration to shallower water about the middle of October and will generally stay there until the lake ‘turns’. During this time, I have found that it makes little difference what jigs size, color, presentation, or whatever you choose…cause the crappie are hungry and willing. Some of my personal best days have been when the air temp was in the 40′s with a light mist falling and the lake in the mid 50′s. Everybody else is in the house watching TV and sipping hot toddies…and I’m on the lake killin’ em. Honestly, nothing too technical about this season, as long as you’re willing to get out in a little weather and can stand catching limits of two pounders.

Fall……hands down, my favorite.

"For you skeptics who say the fish was dead, I assure you it wasn't dead.

That said, I still risked my E-Flite Blade 400 for some entertainment for you
(I used 3 batteries, hence the cut) as fun and challenging for me.
I doubt most others would risk their $450 heli just to hover over the water, let alone dangle a line!

This scenario shows it may be possible to use the Helicopter for fishing, however it would be expensive fishing.

It is always terribly windy here, so on this calm day, those simple waves in the water was of no concern to a sunfish!

It also helps to have lots of fish, like in our Sand Pit Pond where they bite on hooks with no bait! (actually I used fish eggs and the hook 24" from the bobber.
Hey, you never know, if you don't try!
***Caution from past experience***

If the Tail rotor hits the water even slightly, it will immediately cause a crash.
Big fish can drain batteries fast. It takes and hour to charge between flights of only 6 minutes, so this could be a long process to catch a fish.
Sunfish are not big fighters.

I guess the only thing that can ruin the peaceful tranquility of lighted slip float fishing, is a bottled assed Arkie with a Triton boat.

Two or three times a year, my dad and I are able to slip off on a night fishing trip. It is our time together, plus we both really look forward to tearing into ether the walleye or crappie, without having to deal with other fisherman.

So, after having to cancel several trips, we were thrilled to finally get a chance to set out to our home lake (in Oklahoma), to beat up on some post cold front (night bite) paper mouths.

The front had moved the fish back off the bank, and onto the numerous deep brush piles provided by the ODWC. We would simply anchor up, set out the floats, sip coffee, and wait for the fish to bite.

We arrived just after dark to find the lake calm and peaceful. It was a beautiful night. The spring peepers were chirping, and even an old bared owl was hooting off in the distance. The only other sound was the waves gently lapping the sides of the boat.

After a couple of stabs at getting the anchor just right in the lite breeze, we had the boat sitting perfectly on the bushes, and without even spooking the fish.

We had just got settled in, when dad's bobber went under. He set the hook and hauled in a big beautiful black slab-crappie. It was on! They were biting, and we were finally at the right place at the right time. He quickly re-baited, and then -- with a grin -- proceeded to pour us both up a hot steaming cup of coffee.

But just as I was taking a sip, a boat roared around the end of the point that protects the little fishing cove, and headed directly at us. They were racing in our direction with their spotlight blaring into our low light adjusted eyes.

My first thought was they were coming over to shoot the bull. Boy was I wrong! I soon realize, to my shock, that they intended to fish our spot, made evident as they set their boat down and started grabbing for fishing poles.

Their trolling motor crashed into our brush pile just seconds before their giant wake crashed into our boat, knocking dad's coffee over. I had to grab the handrails to keep from being slung out of the boat myself.

We just sit there with our mouths gaping as they jousted out their giant fourteen-foot doodle-sock poles, and started fishing. Then the large bottled assed (two foot shoulders and a four foot ass) Arkie that drove the boat, said with an alarmingly loud voice "I guess you fellers can't fish both sides of this f#$ing brush pile."

How do you deal with a brain dead SOB like that?

Well, all I am going to say is after a crash course in fishing Etiquette he had a change of heart, and decided to leave.

So for those of you who's daddy never taught you any better, here are the first three rules of fishing Etiquette 101.

1.Show some class!

2.Give people their space on the lake!

3.When someone beats you to the spot you want to fish, smile and wave, and then up get up off your big ass and show up earlier next time.

Have you ever reconnected to the care free person you were when you was a kid? It has happen to me two or three times in my forty one years. When it does happen it is like doing a "system restore" on your computer. Each time , I was brought back to a long forgotten frame of mind for a short period of time. Today I reconnected with my inner twelve year old boy.

When I wasn't playing summer league baseball, I would spend all day walking barefoot from fishing hole to fishing hole with an old Zebco 33 and a handful of Humpback Rebels. The days seemed to last forever. My only worry was not going so far that I couldn't make it back home before dark.

Monday the wife took the boys down to Waco to to visit their grandmother, leaving me to fend for myself for a whole week. I have a busy work scheduled, so I didn't mind them making the 6 hr trip without me. At least they would not waste their spring break sitting around the house, waiting for me to get a day off that I may or may not get.

But I did get an unexpected day off, so I decided to leave the city and go back to where I grew up. I charged up my old boat and traveled up river where I knew the crappie would be making their spring spawning run.

It was great. The world was coming back alive from the unseasonably cold winter. The spring peepers were a peeping, the fish were biting and the barred owl s were hooting; just like the did when I was a kid.

And as an added bonus, a group of turkeys went to roost on the river bank, right above me. I haven't heard a turkey gobble in years.

The wife and I took the kids to a nice little lake cabin this weekend. It was her idea; she thought it would be a good to get away from the jobs and all the stress that comes with them. She wanted to catch up on her reading, and wanted me to catch the boys up on not turning into video game zombies.

So after staying Friday night, I took the oldest boy (eight) out to do a little walleye fishing that next morning, and we froze our butts off. We caught one little fish and then raced to the boat ramp after only a couple of hours. 

It warmed up some after lunch, so we stupidly gave it another go, this time with the wife and our youngest boy. It was warmer but having a 3 year old in a bass boat is just not a good idea. If you have kids, I don't have to explain. 

So the next day we went below the dam to try some trout fishing off the bank. It had been years since I had done it, but I remembered that it had a nice bank that would be more conducive to keeping the kids happy. I grabbed some light tackle and some worms at the bait shop and we headed off for the trout stream.

The bank was lined with fly fishermen in their catch-me-screw-me semi gay, but highly fashionably getup's. After a few dirty looks, we went on down stream to a larger pool, so not to wound the dignity their majestic interlude, with our can of worms and squawking kids. We found a nice quite hole with a couple of old geezers sitting in lawn chairs, half asleep with their worms in the water, and started fishing. 

If anyone on that river caught a trout I didn't see it; the fishing was horrible. The kids got bored, and wanting to try casting. So I rigged them up, one with a rooster tail and the other with one of those tiny little rebel crawdads. While I was rigging, I sent the oldest boy up to the truck to get some coffee, and when I got rigged, I chucked the crawdad as far as I could across the river -- just to give it a try. 

And I'll be damned if I didn't come dang close to catching a state record rainbow trout. When I finally got it landed, thanks to the coaching of the two old geezers, it was the biggest rainbow I had ever seen. The old farts went crazy; one whipped out his cell phone and called the game warden. They were sure that it was the record.

We went up to the bait shop and waited for him to show up with a set of scales. The wife was more excited than I was. She busted into the store and announced that her husband had a huge trout if anyone wanted to see it. One smart ass told her "Honey I will have to take your word on that one."  She came back out of the store with her face all red but with half of the spit and whittle club behind her.

Well my trout may be big, but it was two pounds short of a state record. It was 26 inches long and weighed 8 pounds. The state record is a little over 10 pounds.

This is some footage of our hog dog hunt on a Texas ranch in Southern McCulloch county where the pigs are really doing some damage to the pasture. In a few of the scenes you can see how much they've tore up the ground. It's amazing how fast the feral pig population is growing and this is just one effort to keep them under control. We would have never killed as many as we did in less than 24 hours without the use of these well trained dogs. I love to watch them northern TV fishermen slaughtering those pre-spawn walleye. They make it look so simple. They just run up the river, find them schooled in the tail-out of some deep upriver hole, drop anchor through the middle of the hungry school, lower a jig, and start ripping lip. Then after saying something cool like “the spaught on a spaught’, they take their frostbitten fingers, reel in, and head for home – just moments before swamping their boat with too many fish. 

Here in the south it doesn’t seem to work that way. I have tried for almost twenty years -- without much luck -- to take advantage of this yearly migration. The only lip ripping I have accomplished was when I snagged my dad’s bottom lip with a crank-bait – bad luck, all around. 

I fish a deep, clear, 200 foot, highland reservoir in southeast Oklahoma, which has a good population of naturally reproducing walleye. And you would think that these transplanted Yankees would have roughly the same yearly routine as their northern brethren. Does A-Rod stop chasing tail when playing down south? But if they do make a yearly run, I have yet to catch them at it.

You can find them out in the main lake on points, from the first of March, up until it starts getting really hot. They start biting about an hour before dusk, and go until around midnight. They are usually in 5 to 25 ft of water, depending on the moon phase. But again, this is just for a few months.

After that, they just seem to disappear. I guess they go deep, but I am at a loss as to how deep, or where. 

I have tried to find them -- once they quit biting -- with bottom bounce and Lindy Rigs, but an occasional dink is all I can snag. Maybe I am not fishing deep enough; I don't know? But, I have used these tried and true techniques from the bank all the way out to 100 foot of water. I have even tried spurting that walleye attractant (comes in toothpaste looking tube, but smells like Rosie O’Donnell’s dirty jock strap) on my lure, but to no avail.  

In the spring they can be caught fairly easy by long line trolling crank-baits, using three way rigs with stick baits, or on jigs with minnows -- they all work equally well. My usual plan of attack is to find them trolling and then try to set up and cast, once I have a good lock on their position. But despite all my spring success, the summer fishing is different. Twenty years of getting skunked has caused me to call calf-rope on the summer walleye. 

Back to the spawn, my first year chasing walleye I naively thought that I would just wait until they made their spawning run, then I could easily get my revenge for all of my summer frustrations. Wrong, I froze my butt off, beating the water to freaking icy foam, up and down the river, from January until March without catching anything more than a cold. Then just like clockwork again, they started biting out in the main lake, around the first of March.  

They say that further north that they start making their run when the water gets to 46 degrees, or just after ice-out. But 46 degrees is as about as cold as the water gets down here. So when do they move? Like the Joy Behar show, it is just a source of frustration that will make you dumber trying to make sense of.

Some of my best memories have been out on that lake, chasing those elusive Yankee fish. With my dad and brother, with my friends, including the one I lost to cancer, and now with my sons. I hope that I can retire someday, and then maybe my grandsons and I will finally have time to figure them out.

I am really excited about launching this new website. Like Conservative Blogs Central and CBC News, CBC Outdoors will be a community blog. I plan on finding the best outdoors bloggers available and then give them a place to share their knowledge. I will add their site feeds and provide a forum to post like we are doing here. 

I so look forward to getting to know America through the eyes of real American outdoorsmen. I envision great stories on deer, turkey, bass, walleye, quail, and everything other great game species this great country has to offer. Plus, unlike outdoor magazines CBC Outdoors will not be a slave to advertisers. Allowing our Bloggers to give non-biased product reviews on the latest and greatest outdoor equipment.
